Guardiense is one of the most famous companies in the Benevento area. The absolute excellence of this Campania wine terroir is located in Guardia Sanframondi, in an area dedicated to viticulture since the time of the Samnites and then the ancient Romans, who made it an important production area. The vine tradition has remained alive over the centuries and in the 1900s the extensive vineyard in the Province of Benevento produced in large quantities. The grapes were often purchased by traders in the Neapolitan area, who managed to obtain low prices and thus obtain large profits. It was in that period that the first cooperative wineries began to emerge, created by small winemakers, who joined together to increase their commercial power and to begin making wine from the grapes together, thus escaping the ruthless logic of the market.
The La Guardiense Agricultural Cooperative was born from this tradition and was founded by 28 farmers, 2 teachers and 3 doctors, who decided to join forces aware of the value of the fruits of their labor. The territory of Sannio occupies the north-eastern area of Campania and is crossed by the Calore river. Its extension is delimited by the mountainous reliefs of the Taburno Massif to the south and the Matese Mountains to the north, which create an imposing frame, which encloses a hilly area that rises gently towards the mountain reliefs. The climate is continental and always very windy. Sunny days are followed by cold nights which favor the ripening of the grapes with very intense aromas. The soils are rather heterogeneous with a significant percentage of clay, mixed with limestone, sand, sandstone and volcanic components.
Precisely to better understand the characteristics and peculiarities of the different territories, La Guardiense has undertaken careful zoning work, with the aim of improving the quality of the grapes and wines. The variability of the soils present in the Telesina valley was a stimulus to better understand the nature of the soils of each vineyard and to improve the interaction between plant, rootstock and subsoil. Patient and meticulous work, which led to a profound knowledge of the individual parcels and to consistently improving the quality level of production. Today the range of wines in the cellar is divided into different collections and many labels, each with particular characteristics, which authentically interpret the Guardia Sanframondi area.
