Portugal is one of the European countries where viticulture was introduced by the Phoenicians and strongly developed by the Romans. From the end of the 17th century Portuguese wines were highly commercialized, when England, at war with France, imposed heavy taxes on French wines. Its most famous products are Port and Madeira and recently Vinho Verde.
