Nero d'Avola or Calabrese is a Sicilian black grape variety. It has about 12,000 hectares of total area, and has its territory of origin in the towns of Eloro, Pachino and Noto, in the province of Syracuse. There are several differences of character between the blacks of avola produced in the central-western part of Sicily and those of the south-eastern area: the former are almost always more fruity and sweet on the palate; the Nero d'Avola cultivated in the south-eastern area, are decidedly finer and more articulate, with marked hints of dried flowers and spices, in particular those grown in the districts bounded by the denominations of controlled origin Eloro and Noto.
