Toscana IGT 'Schidione' 2019 (750 ml.) - Jacopo Biondi Santi

Toscana Rosso 'Schidione' by Tenuta Castello di Montepò, owned by Jacopo Biondi Santi, is made on the splendid hills in the Scansano area. This is an incredible Supertuscan, obtained from a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vinified separately. The resulting wine then ages in French wooden barriques for approximately 24 months, followed by a further 6 in stainless steel vats. Deep red, elegant and complex, with a pleasant olfactory impact of cherries in jam and ripe red fruits, with aromas of undergrowth and vanilla in the background. When tasted, it stands out with a full and well-structured body, characterized by velvety and tasty tannins. To be kept for special occasions, thanks to a longevity of over 40 years.

Jacopo Biondi Santi is the heir and continuer of one of the most illustrious names in Italian wine. He is in fact the son of Franco, the gentleman of Brunello, the one who made Tenuto il Greppo in Montalcino a great international point of reference. Today, alongside the famous Ilcinese estate, Jacopo also manages the vast estates of the historic Montepò Castle, south of Grosseto, in the heart of the Maremma. It is a subjective and personal challenge that began in 1991 and from which linear and immediately understandable territorial interpretations are born, representing an international and modern style. On the one hand, Jacopo has the awareness of being part of one of the most historic families linked to the world of wine in Italy, on the other, an enterprising personality takes off, who wants to express his own future vision beyond a very glorious past, putting their strong entrepreneurial skills are at stake.

The cellar of Jacopo Biondi Santi's Castello di Montepò has a truly remarkable extension of almost 220 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards wind along a hilly and foothill strip, which starts from the north and east and heads towards the Albinia plain and towards the Tyrrhenian coast. Each parcel obviously has different exposures and altitudes, which can reach up to 500 metres. The microclimate is, in general, ventilated and dry, with significant temperature variations between day and night, ideal for promoting quality viticulture. The subsoils present considerable mineral richness, characterized by a strong presence of shale. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and, obviously, Sangiovese, the vine that made the family's fortune, are grown between the rows. Between the rows, each operation is followed and monitored with great attention by the cellar team, as also happens in every phase of winemaking and refinement.

The Jacopo Biondi Santi winery is a reality that, every year, gives rise to several top-level reds, the result of the high wine-growing potential of the Maremma area. Montepò Castle represents one of the oldest and most important historical testimonies of the area, also known by the novelist Graham Greene, and the labels produced retain this unmistakably Tuscan charm. Among the different bottles, the "Sassoalloro" elegantly interprets Sangiovese, giving a full-bodied and elegant sip at the same time.
