THE WINE

Vanotu is the diminutive in the Piedmontese dialect of Giovanni, Giorgio's grandfather and the former owner of this vineyard. It is a part of our business that we are very attached to. Thanks to the particular microclimate and the positioning of this land, we are able to produce wines of great character and personality even in small vintage years.

Technical Notes: PProduced using modern and innovative techniques (controlled temperatures, timed and programmed automatic mechanical punching), the aim is to capture the maximum expression of the varietal characteristics of Nebbiolo in the bottle. Aged for 20 to 22 months in barriques (80% new) and nine months in the bottle, the goal is to achieve concentration, fruitiness, and a soft, enveloping tannic complexity. The intention is to create an innovative wine while striving to maintain and enhance the great qualities of Nebbiolo. The first vintage bottled was 1960.

CASCINA VANOTU

Vanotu is the most prestigious of our vineyards, the one that gifted us the first bottles in 1960. It is a plot of land located between 300 and 350 meters in altitude, completely south-facing and situated in the natural closure of one of the most beautiful hills in the area. Barbaresco. Geographically, it is located on the border of the three municipalities of the production area of the Barbaresco.

The highest part is located in the municipality of Barbaresco, in the subzone called Tre Stelle and it is the first to have been replanted by Luigi Pelissero in 1964. It also includes an old farmhouse under renovation for the creation of a small accommodation facility. Below this portion, downstream of the provincial road, lies the part of the vineyard belonging to the Municipality of Treiso, in the subzone called Marcarini. Traveling through the vineyard towards the east, one finally enters the portion of the Municipality of Neive, the smallest of the three, in the subzone called Basarin. A natural crossroads of three villages, three beating hearts for the entire economy of this beautiful territory.

The microclimate is well-ventilated with few issues related to mold, thanks to its location on the upper part of the hill. This ensures a regular seasonal progression even in less favorable years. The soil, particularly rich in limestone, gives rise to soft, elegant, enticing wines that are full of personality, always very expressive of the individual vintages through notes of sage, mint, rose, chamomile, thyme, and a multitude of aromatic herbs that only some soils in Langa can express.

THE COMPANY

Our family has always been dedicated to agriculture with Langhe and farming DNA. We are in Treiso, an independent municipality from Barbaresco since 1957, in the heart of the production area of one of the first DOCG Italian, the Barbaresco, son of King Nebbiolo, the variety that more than any other has shaped and will continue to shape the history of our hills and of national and international winemaking. We are children of this land and of this grape variety.

The spirit of continuous research, both in the vineyard and then in the cellar, along with passion, commitment, and innovative dynamism are our constants that unite with the pride of having now reached the third generation of grape growers. However, the philosophy has not changed: only indigenous varieties typical of our lands, particularly Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto, which account for 85% of our production. All the grapes we use come from our 38 hectares of owned land, and we are able, with the help of skilled collaborators, to directly oversee the entire production cycle of the company, from pruning to the marketing of the 250,000 bottles produced annually.
