The 'Sole di Sesta' by Cottanera is a mineral and fruity Syrah that comes from vineyards rooted in volcanic soils in the Cottanera and Feudo di Mezzo areas of Castiglione di Sicilia. After manual harvesting and skin maceration, it ages for 16 months in first and second passage French oak barriques, followed by an additional 18 months in the bottle. The aromas present a complex and rich aromatic profile, with chocolate and spicy notes of black pepper, as well as mature fruit scents such as blueberry and black currant, along with Mediterranean scrub, typical of the grape variety. Cottanera

In the magical setting of Mount Etna, where the land tells ancient stories of lava and fire, lies the winery Cottanera, a wine gem of Sicily. Here, the wild and untamed nature of Etna meets the skilled hands of the winemakers, giving life to wines that are the very essence of this unique and fascinating territory. Cottanera, with its passion for viticulture, has quickly established itself as one of the most solid and promising realities of Etna, celebrated for its ability to combine precision, freshness, and a strong territorial identity.
The production philosophy of Cottanera is a hymn to tradition, but with an eye on the future. The winery embraces sustainable viticulture, respecting the volcanic nature of the soils and enhancing the peculiarities of the indigenous grape varieties of the area. Nerello Mascalese and Carricante are the varieties that dominate the vineyards, cultivated with care and dedication, to best express the minerality and complexity of the Etnean terroir.
Among the main labels, the Etna Rosso Contrada Zottorinotto stands out, a wine that embodies the elegance and structure typical of Nerello Mascalese, with aromatic notes that evoke berries, spices, and an unmistakable hint of flint. Each sip is a sensory journey through the slopes of Etna, an experience that tells of breathtaking landscapes and winemaking traditions passed down from generation to generation.

THE ESTATE

Among the most important estates in the Etna area today, both in terms of size and quality, Cottanera is a winegrowing reality that started as a hazelnut grove in the early 1960s, thanks to the work of the grandparents of the current owners, Francesco Cambria.
We are at an altitude of about seven hundred meters above sea level, in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, in a beautiful area of the northern slope of the volcano, characterized by a territory particularly suited for agriculture, an ideal condition for the conversion to vineyard that began in the early 1970s and continued decisively in the 1990s. It was during that period that all the plots underwent a progressive modernization, with the introduction of international varieties, and it was also during that time that the estate expanded to its current one hundred hectares, approximately 65 of which are currently planted with vineyards.
Among the rows, the indigenous varieties of carricante, nerello mascalese, and inzolia grow alongside syrah, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot grapes. Vines cultivated in full respect of nature, environment, and ecosystem produce valuable fruits that are pure, rich, and concentrated in every organoleptic nuance. The clusters are interpreted in the winery according to the most ancient local traditions, enhancing and valuing everything that the territory and the season have created.
The wines produced today by the winery in Castiglione di Sicilia showcase a distinctly modern character, both captivating and elegant in revealing their unmistakable Sicilian soul.
