Alto Adige DOC Lagrein Riserva 2022 (750 ml.) Waldgries

Lagrein Riserva by Waldgries is proof that a powerful body often hides a delicate personality. It comes from old vines over 20 years old in the Furggl area near Ora where the grapes are loaded with structure and vigor. It is vinified 1/3 in large wooden barrels and 2/3 in barriques for 12 months. A special feature: 10% of the grapes are left to ferment together with their stalks to acquire vigor and tannins. The single-variety wine appears in the glass in a purple red dress with a black heart and unfolds an inviting aromatic interplay of chocolate, plum and licorice. The palate is enveloped by its compact structure, is enchanted by the refreshing acidity and seduced by its crisp Lagrein aromas. The Lagrein Riserva pairs well with equally crispy dishes such as braised or grilled red meat, game, venison and spicy hard cheeses.

The history of Waldgries, a reality embodied by the figure of Christian Plattner, begins way back in 1930, when Christian's grandfather buys the estate and starts exporting the wines he produces to Switzerland. His father then takes over the management of the winery, engaging in a pioneering bottling activity, a practice not yet widespread in the Santa Maddalena area. From these solid family foundations, it is now Christian who carries forward the name and fame of the winery, with foresight and winemaking talent but always looking back towards the roots that shaped him. Waldgries, for example, produces expressions of Lagrein and Schiava with a rich structure and body due, in addition to the impeccable work in the cellar, also to the nature of its soils, of glacial origin and rich in porphyry. Waldgries is certainly a point of reference for mountain viticulture, which owes its success to the talent of the winemaker who manages it, strong in his historic family roots.
